FDIC Selling Off Detroit Inventory
In fact the agency’s head just announced this week that it has adjusted its estimate of how many of the nation’s banks are seriously in trouble of going out of business this year upward from 90 in Q1 2008 to 117 now. So it’s no wonder that it has no time to play nursemaid to a bunch of foreclosed real estate in foreclosure-laden Detroit, Mich. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. is having no trouble keeping busy these days.

LONG BEACH, Calif. — If California’s economic indicators stay at their present course, 2007 should be a very good year for investing and purchasing foreclosure properties at bargain prices. Las Vegas Foreclosure Activity Map
Since weve posted a foreclosure activity map for both Stockton and Detroit , I thought we should probably also include a map of Las Vegas, given its one of the top three on our list of 2007 metro foreclosure rates . Just like in Stockton and Detroit, the foreclosures are stacked on each other. In fact, we could only include activity from December because there were just too many foreclosure filings from the fourth quarter to fit on the map. Any of you living there in Las Vegas want to clue us in on what youre seeing on the ground? Posted

A Small Silver Lining in Q1 Foreclosure Storm
While foreclosure activity in the first quarter of 2008 was up on a year-over-year basis in 90 percent of the nations 100 largest metropolitan areas, according to the RealtyTrac Q1 report issued today, there were a few notable exceptions that could prove to be a harbinger of hope for the nations battered housing market. The notable exceptions included Detroit — a longtime posterchild for the foreclosure meltdown — and Philadelphia, along with a few other Pennsylvania metro areas. On the other hand, those exceptions could just turn out to be a source of false hope, perpetuated in part by short-term foreclosure solutions that are about as effective as a five-gallon bailing bucket on the sinking Titanic.

Make Food, Not Foreclosures
Just like it was in 2007, Wayne County has been a hotbed of foreclosure activity in Michigan so far in 2008. Similar to other parts of the nation’s Rust Belt, the county’s real estate market — particularly Detroit — is suffering. The pilot program would start with 20 plots, with the City of Detroit donating the water. A non-profit group has launched a program to turn former foreclosures into farmland. National Public Radio is reporting that the non-profit group Urban Farming requested that Wayne County, Mich.,

Motor City Tops MSA Foreclosure List in Q3
As if it wasn’t bad enough that the local economy has been steadily losing jobs in the automotive sector, Detroit reported the highest foreclosure rate of the top 100 metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) in the country for the third quarter of 2006 as well. After two straight quarters when Indianapolis, Atlanta and Dallas led the nation in foreclosure rate, Detroit took over the top spot on the RealtyTrac Q3 2006 U.S. Metropolitan Foreclosure Market Report — followed by Ft. Lauderdale and Denver .

Foreclosures Begin 2007 at Two-Year High
Substantial increases in foreclosure activity in Detroit and Atlanta helped drive up the foreclosure rates in Michigan and Georgia. Detroit’s foreclosure total more than doubled from the previous month, giving it the nation’s highest metropolitan foreclosure rate — one new foreclosure filing for every 124 households. New foreclosure activity in January hit its highest level since RealtyTrac began issuing a national foreclosure report two years ago, with 130,511 new foreclosure filings reported during the month. That was up 19 percent from the previous month and up 25 percent from

Foreclosures Fade in World Series Spotlight
The Detroit Tigers are the feel-good story of this year’s World Series, having made it to baseball’s big dance only three years after posting 119 losses — one of the worst records in history. Detroit’s Wayne County reported 4,190 properties entering foreclosure in September, the second most only behind Chicago’s Cook County (whose fans didn’t have any team to cheer in the playoffs this year). The Tigers have given local fans a chance to momentarily forget about another dubious distinction: that they reside in a city with one of the highest foreclosure rates in the nation . The

The Trickle Down Effecting High-Tech
The five — Sacramento, Tampa, Phoenix, Detroit and Orlando — were also among the nation’s top metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) ranked by foreclosure rate, according to RealtyTrac, for the quarter studied by The NPD Group. on RealtyTrac’s Top 100 metro areas for the first quarter of 2008, reporting a 135 percent year-over-year increase in foreclosure activity and a foreclosure rate of one in every 55 households receiving a foreclosure filing during the period. The prolonged housing slump is having a measurable effect on the overall economy, and not just on home furnishings and housing supply chains (like Linens N’ Things, which recently filed for bankruptcy protection).
