Jackson Takes a Final Bow at HUD
The official press conference came in the afternoon. However, like on so many occasions the press got wind of the announcement before it happened and started writing about it ahead of time. The 13th HUD secretary since the agency was established in 1965, Jackson announced his official last day on the job as April 18. He gave himself a couple of weeks to clean out his desk, clear out of his office and say his final goodbyes to his staff. After that, Alphonso Jackson will probably be looking for something a little less in the public eye…at least for a while. Jackson gave

May Home Prices Down 4.8 Percent
Home prices were down again in May, but a few regions of the country experienced a ever-slight uptick in prices from the previous month, giving officials at the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight (OFHEO) a chance to be cautiously optimistic in the press release announcing the numbers. "It percent from April and down 4.8 quot;It is very hard to draw conclusions from a one-month number, especially in these uncertain times; but the numbers in the Pacific, East and West North Central Divisions may be good signs," said OFHEO Director James B. Lockhart in the release.

A Small Silver Lining in Q1 Foreclosure Storm
The Detroit Free Press reported that "Detroit home sales shot up 30.8% moratorium on all foreclosure sales scheduled in April there has now been replaced by a pilot program that delays foreclosure proceedings on owner-occupied properties until the homeowner and lender meet in a "conciliation conference," according to the Philadelphia Business Journal . Foreclosure sales originally scheduled for April and May will be postponed until at least July. While foreclosure activity in the first quarter of 2008 was up on a year-over-year basis in 90 percent of the nations 100 largest metropolitan areas, according to the RealtyTrac Q1 report issued today, there were a few notable exceptions that could prove to be a harbinger of hope for the nations battered housing market.

New Poll: Buyers to Remain on the Fence
If the results of the latest Associated Press-AOL Money & Finance poll are any indication, prospective home buyers will be keeping their wallets closed and remain on the fence at least until the latest economic downturn blows over. Conducted between March 24 and April 3, 2008, by Abt SRBI Inc., And that could be years down the road. A majority of those polled for the survey expressed pessimism over the nation’s housing contraction (as the Federal Reserve calls it) enough to not consider buying a home anytime soon.
