Foreclosures Begin 2007 at Two-Year High
Michigan and Georgia ranked second and third among the states in terms of foreclosure rate. Substantial increases in foreclosure activity in Detroit and Atlanta helped drive up the foreclosure rates in Michigan and Georgia. Texas, California and Florida continued to report the top three monthly foreclosure totals among all the states. New foreclosure activity in January hit its highest level since RealtyTrac began issuing a national foreclosure report two years ago, with 130,511 new foreclosure filings reported during the month. That was up 19 percent from the previous month

Foreclosures Exceed 100K for Fifth Month
Colorado, Nevada and Georgia posted the nation’s three highest state foreclosure rates despite decreasing foreclosure activity in all three states. Texas foreclosure activity increased 4 percent, helping the state reclaim the top spot from California in terms of total foreclosures. U.S. foreclosure activity dropped 9 percent in December, backing down from a November foreclosure total that was the year’s highest.

2006 Foreclosure Filings Surpass 1.2 Million
Georgia and Nevada posted the second and third highest state foreclosure rates. Texas reported 156,876 foreclosure filings during the year, the most of any state and nearly 13 percent of the national total. More than 1.2 million foreclosure filings were reported nationwide during 2006, up 42 percent from 2005 and a foreclosure rate of one foreclosure filing for every 92 households, according to the RealtyTrac 2006 U.S.

FBI: Mortgage Fraud Begets Foreclosure
The correlation is apparent in the report’s list of the top states for mortgage fraud: California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Texas, and Utah. The FBI recently came out with its 2006 Mortgage Fraud Report , which somewhat anticlimactically concludes that there is “a strong correlation between mortgage fraud and loans which result in default or foreclosure.” Six of those states also appeared in RealtyTrac’s list of states with the highest foreclosure rates in 2006.
