  • Defaulting on the American Dream: A Troubling Trend
A rising number of Americans — particularly those who took out riskier adjustable-rate and subprime mortgages — are increasingly defaulting on their loans, according to figures released this week by RealtyTrac , providing striking evidence that a growing number of borrowers are at risk of losing their homes. • Appreciation Rates Foreshadow Foreclosures
Third-quarter house price appreciation figures released last week by the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight provide more evidence of a cooling real estate market and further foreshadowing of a continued rise in foreclosures — all pointing to more opportunities for real estate investors to buy low. New York and New Hampshire home prices also declined on a quarterly basis. Posted 12-08-2006 7:38 AM by darenb Filed under: Foreclosure Trends , Real Estate Trend

  • Fed Remains in Hibernation on Interest Rates
The recent actions of the Federal Open Market Committee may seem unresponsive to concerns of industries, like real estate, that believe lowering interest rates will help the industry pull itself up by its bootstraps and reverse the current downward trend. Economic growth slowed in the first part of this year and the adjustment in the housing sector is ongoing,” the Committee said in a statement released Wednesday . “Although After 17 consecutive meetings of raising interest rates, and a switch over to new leadership under Ben Bernanke, the Federal Reserve went into hibernation last August and has remained there ever since.
